This week belonged to the Boys. Or, as Girls' Generation might say, June brings the boys out. We saw big comebacks from Taeyang, U-Kiss, B.A.P, Z:EA, and Boyfriend. And there's already Vixx, Infinite, and Fly to the Sky to contend with (to name a few). Is this the beginning of a boy-dominated summer? Maybe. July does have some big name girl groups coming back. But that's July. For now, let's look at the big stories for the first week of June, shall we?
Taeyang's "Eyes, Nose, Lips"
Taeyang came back this week and we gave our take on his new song and video for, "Eyes, Nose, Lips." We were really impressed by the simplicity of the video and the song. You can check out our full review here.
Our Obsession with 'the Single' is hurting Kpop. Can We Stop It?
This week in opinion we tackle the sticky subject of the Kpop single. Is the hyper-focused attention given to singles hurting innovation in Kpop? Is it forcing artists into a corner? And if so, is there anything we can do to stop it? Read the full piece here, and sound off in the comments!
Underrated Artist: NS Yoon-G
This week we talked about another underrated artist: NS Yoon-G. We think she has all the makings of a superstar. But something is holding her back from that level and we just don't get it. You can learn more about NS Yoon-G, and why you should be listening to her music, here.
U-Kiss' "Quit Playing"
Wow. Did you see that? Did they just...? I mean...
Those are some reactions you might have used or heard after watching this video. All we will say is that it's not safe for work, rated 19+ (but why are you watching Kpop videos at work anyway?). And that this video may make you uncomfortable, especially if you have an aversion to sexy concepts. Sexy...or maybe the right word here is sleazy? Members of U-Kiss even flirt with their backup dancers! Over the top? Yes. Does it work? You tell us!
B.A.P's "Where Are You?"
We were surprised by B.A.P's cute summer "Where Are You?" Especially after their melodramatic "1004 (Angel)." While unexpected, it's a shift that works for us. It's good to see a different side of these guys, something less polished that can show their personalities by goofing off. A perfect song to kick off the summer.
Your Boyfriends are growing up! Boyfriend came back this week with the impressive, "Obsession." This is a more mature offering from the group and we feel like it contrasts well with the super cute B.A.P comeback and the sex-crazed U-Kiss one. But what do you think?
Z:EA came back this week and is severely at risk of being overlooked with the glut of boy groups making comebacks. Still, we enjoyed the song ("So sorry [sorry...sorry...sorry...]!") and the video's fantastical, and a bit cheesy, space setting. More whimsical than the other releases this week, we're hoping that Z:EA can still grab the attention they deserve. It starts with you. Check them out!
Davichi came back this week too, and though we liked the song, we weren't blown away by it and were also not so impressed with the confusing video. Not a bad song by any stretch, but not something that really stands out, especially with all the boys taking up all that space. There's also word that Davichi won't be promoting this song, so it definitely has a hard time of making an impact (though it is doing well on music charts in Korea). But anyway, the video's still worth a watch. And if you understand the video, please explain it for us in the comments section, won't you?
Interview with Angel, the Strategist of Pop! Goes the World!
This week we had an interview with the Strategist of Pop! Goes the World!, the first and only Kpop agency in Canada. You can check out our video interview here and check out Pop! Goes the World! right here, they're a great organization.

June 1-7, 2014
So that's the week in Kpop! Was there a boy group that we somehow forgot to mention? A girl group that was lost in the shuffle? A scandal that we ignored? Let us know. Next week should be special/possibly controversial with PSY's new song premiering on Jimmy Kimmel Live, so we'll keep a close eye on that and all the other Kpop happenings. See you next week!
