This Week in Kpop: June 22-28, 2014

Hyomin Nice Body

This week we found scandal galore! It's been like this for most of 2014 really, one controversy after another. But this was the first week where the scandals made us feel exhausted. Anyone else feel that way? We can't be alone on this. We're just hoping that July will wash these problems away and remind us how fun Kpop can be. With all the comebacks expected next week, we're optimistic. But this week was the worst.

Ninety-Five Theses re: Taeyeon and Baekhyun

In the vein of Martin Luther's 95 theses from 500 years ago, we took a look at the developing story of Taeyeon and Baekhyun's romance and the bizarre fallout. You might find it unorthodox, but, we promise you, it's the last argument you'll need to read on the subject. You can check that out here

Got Love for GOT7?

GOT7

We've been waiting patiently for GOT7’s new mini album, Got Love, or Got♡ and finally, this week, it came out. And we were mostly happy with it. Mostly. See if GOT7 made the grade, in our review, here.

The Uncertain Fate of Nine Muses

Nine Muses Sera

Didn't we say this week was the worst? We were devastated to hear about Sera's abrupt departure from one of our favorite girl groups, Nine Muses. This came after the announcement that Eunji and Lee Sam would be leaving the group. So what's the deal with Nine Muses? We have some questions, and a few answers too, here

Hyomin's "Nice Body" teasers

We're very excited about Hyomin's upcoming debut. With all the teasers and previews of teasers, it's about time we saw the music video! Good thing it's coming out next week. But we are just as concerned as we are excited. Kpop already perpetuates body issues with young women, and this video, with Hyomin in a fat suit admiring Barbie dolls, could be tremendously problematic. We'll save judgment until after we've seen the full video, holding out hope that Hyomin and CCM is going for a heavy dose of social commentary. We really doubt that's the case. Still, it should be fun, and Hyomin's one of our favorites. Check our review here next week. And the 19+ version (which isn't really that salacious) here

History's "Psycho"

History's new video for "Psycho" is crazy. On purpose. We're digging the Hitchcockian elements and the eighties vibe and think that History has some of the best vocals in Kpop. The video probably could have done more with the concept, but it's still fun and a bit scary too. Worth a watch.

f(x) Teasers for "Red Light"

After releasing news of the comeback at the end of an episode of Jungsis, f(x) have now leaked teaser photos for Krystal. We expect more teasers to come, but if this one is anything to go by, the new concept will be quite a bit darker than their earlier work. We can't wait to see where they take it!

K.Will's "1 Day"

K.Will came back this week with one of the cuter videos we've seen in quite some time. Kpop scandals got you down? Watch this video. It worked wonders for us.

June 22-28, 2014

Did we miss anything? Is there anything we should have mentioned but didn't? Always feel free to leave comments. This week did have a hefty share of heartbreak and frustration, but also some bright spots too! We're hoping next week, with its many releases, will bring some lighthearted cheer in this scandalous summer!
