This week in Kpop has come and gone, and we're here for your weekly recap! This week was, finally, all about the music - with no new major scandals to shock the Kpop world. We saw the debut of Winner, the return of Secret, and Taemin's "Danger." Next week sees more returns from the likes of BTS, Orange Caramel, and Kara. We don't know if we can handle it. But let's try, shall we?
Review: Is Winner the next Big Bang?
Kpop fans were treated to the long-awaited debut of Winner this week, and we have the full review of their album here. But we also wonder how big Winner can be. As big as Big Bang? Bigger even?
Review: Secret's "Secret Summer" Comeback
Kpop fans were also excited this week to see the return of Secret, and not just their return, a return to the sexiness that propelled them to the top of their charts. We're hoping they can reignite that momentum that shouldn't have died with "Talk That," but to do so, they'd have to deliver a solid comeback. So, did they? Check out our full review here, to find out.
Taemin (of SHINee) had his solo debut this week and "Danger" really gave him a chance to showcase his talent and skills. A very catchy song, with some visual cues taken from "Clockwork Orange," we really think that Taemin has the sexy charisma to carry a solo career far. Will he be overshadowed by BTS' own "Danger" coming out just next week? We think he'll be able to make his own distinct mark on the charts, especially with SM backing him all the way. And there's something decidedly old school about "Danger" that reminds us of early Michael Jackson or other 80's American pop, that sounds very different from the other guy groups and solo artists. And we mean that in a good way. It's just good to see guys, who have been noticeably quiet these past few weeks, make a return to the Kpop scene! And the best part is, we really love this song!
Kara's "Mama Mia" Trailer
Kara's coming back and the Kpop world was jazzed over their teaser. Can Kara overcome all their problems and deliver a killer hit? We think so, but only if they start showing some joy in this comeback. Every time you turn around, it seems like Kara is crying or apologizing over something. Hopefully Kara can find happiness in their return. Anything else would be painful.
Orange Caramel's "My Copycat" Teaser
Can you find Orange Caramel in this teaser? They're back next week. I repeat. They're back. Next. Week.
Spica's Identity Crises
At Critical Kpop, we're big fans of Spica. Which makes their strange identity crisis that much harder to witness. We've seen them at their best, at their most confused, and now we're seeing the beginnings of, quite possibly, an ill-conceived venture into America. But where do they go from here? Check out our thoughts here. We'd also, as always, love to get your opinion on this.
