Goodbye Kpop World!

Dear Reader,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that we are discontinuing Critical Kpop. It has been a wonderful journey taking one night's alcohol-infused idea to the full realization of a website and podcast. Along the way we met amazing friends, fans, and fellow enthusiasts, and we thank you all for your support. We end our journey with pride in what we were able to accomplish.

Critical Kpop went live on March 25, 2014, and in the past two years we have worked hard to achieve our mission of elevating the conversation around Kpop. In our original mission statement, we asserted our belief that "all art is better appreciated when viewed through a critical lens." Everything we have done in these past two years, the 400+ articles and 28 podcasts we published, was in service of this goal.

We recognize that our announcement may be rather sudden for some of our fans. In fact, this is very sudden to us as well! But, recent changes in our lives have made this project of love an impossible task. Rather than see Critical Kpop devolve, we wish to go out on a high note. No "jumping the damaged lady" for us!

Our site was entirely self-created, self-maintained, and self-funded. It would be difficult to estimate the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that went into Critical Kpop, but we leave feeling confident that we put everything we had into this endeavor. We also want to thank our amazing staff of writers for their contributions and their confidence in our mission.

As a parting thought, we encourage all Kpop fans to continue to look closer at the visual and cultural aspects of the genre, and to "listen harder" to the music. Just because the genre purports to be "pop," that doesn't mean that it is not worthy of a critical lens. Kpop is fun, yes. But Kpop is also an art form.

Have fun and stay safe!

Sincerely,
Timothy Moore and Zander Stachniak

(No pun intended... heeee) It has been fascinating and exciting to look at K-pop through a more analytical lens. Thank you for all your hard work. If any of the other contributors continue writing on another platform, please let us know! Until then, I will continue to listen harder, guys! Xoxoxoxoxo

  2. When I first stumbled upon your site, I was really thrilled to finally find a group of people who encouraged critical fan discussions. You guys managed to lessen the frustration I had with the lack of discourse in the fandom, so I really enjoyed regularly checking your site for new articles and podcasts. It won't be the same without you, but I wish you the best of luck. Thank you so much for everything!

  4. Thanks guys, for being the voice of reason in the K-Pop world. While all other sites focused on gossip, you presented great analysis and very honest opinion pieces. I loved the article - "Review: ‘Sixteen’ is My New Guilty Pleasure" and had since followed your site.

You guys did an amazing job. We readers can tell that you put your heart into your articles. Great effort guys!
